If you’re flying into Puerto Rico, you can catch a taxi or an Uber from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. The ride to Old San Juan is only about 20 minutes, so you’ll be there in no time! Alternatively, you can rent a car and drive yourself to Old San Juan.
If you’re coming from other parts of the island, taking a shuttle service or public bus is a great option.
What to Do and Why Visit
As you step into Old San Juan (THE San Juan Neighborhood) the first landmarks to catch your eye are the imposing forts that stand guard over the city.
El Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal are like time machines, taking you back to the 16th century. You can explore tunnels and dungeons, climb up to garitas (sentry boxes), and imagine the soldiers who once stood watch. And yes, you can even pose for pictures with the original cannons!
As you stroll through the blue cobblestone streets, you’ll feel like you’re walking through a movie set.
The stunning pastel-colored buildings are a feast for the eyes, and you’ll see how they blend perfectly with cultural landmarks and striking monuments. It’s like a symphony of architecture, with Spanish, African, and indigenous Taíno cultures all playing a part.
There are plenty of walking tours available, but if you are with a group and looking for something unique, I recommend joining in on this Old San Juan Murder Mystery Tour! It sounds like a super fun activity!
And don’t think for a second that Viejo San Juan is just for history buffs. When shopping for souvenirs, you’ll find everything from handcrafted goods to fine jewelry and even cigars and rum!
And when hunger strikes, get ready for a culinary adventure. Puerto Rican cuisine is a delicious fusion of flavors, and you’ll find everything from classic dishes like mofongo to modern twists on Caribbean favorites.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
