mountains and boats floating on the sea with a big deck on the right on catalina island

Catalina Island, California

By Olivia from the Girl With Blue Sails

Catalina Island, just off the coast of Southern California, is one of the best destinations for a romantic weekend getaway. Catalina Island can only be reached by ferry and doesn’t allow cars onto the island. This sleepy little beach town is entirely walkable and has many cozy restaurants and quaint accommodations to rent this Valentine’s Day.

While Catalina Island may be small, there are plenty of activities on the island for couples during the day. Options include food-tasting tours, jeep sightseeing tours into the hills of the island, zip-lining activities, and, of course, spending the day in coastal luxury by renting a cabana at the Descanso Beach Club

Businesses close early in Avalon, so be sure to make your dinner plans early before retiring to your cozy evening with your significant other. Another great tip when visiting Catalina Island is to book your accommodations as close to the water as possible, as Avalon is built onto a hill and the inland accommodations require a fair bit of uphill walking.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, be sure to keep an eye out for Valentine’s Day sales. A lot of the island hotels will include romantic package deals for couples, and some will even include wine, candies, and roundtrip ferry tickets.

Romantic Things to Do on Catalina Island

  • Walk Along the Waterfront — strolling along the bay area is one of the best ways to soak up the atmosphere of this little town. A short distance from there, there’s a cute and old-fashioned candy shop Lloyd’s of Avalon where you can stop by for a sweet treat.
  • Take a Catalina Scenic Tour — the island has so much to see that it’s easy to miss out on beautiful hidden spots. This tour takes you beyond crowded tourist spots and it’s a must-do for first-time visitors.
  • Take a Short Trip Under the Sea — this Underwater Cruise will take you on a journey five feet below the surface to admire marine life up close through the windows of the boat.

sunset reflecting on the water in olympic national park washington

Olympic National Park, Washington

By Justin from Uprooted Traveler

If you’re looking to enjoy epic landscapes together for Valentine’s Day, consider heading to Olympic National Park in the northwestern corner of Washington State. This park offers a ton of diverse scenery in a relatively small footprint—from some of the United States’ only temperate rainforests to towering mountains and rugged beaches.

There’s plenty of adventures to be had together. For example, take advantage of the blanket of snow covering the Olympic Mountains. Drive up to Hurricane Hill, the ridge of a 5,700-foot tall mountain, to snowshoe, go tubing, or skiing, all with the stunning backdrop of the surrounding mountain range.

About two hours away, you’ll find the lush Hoh Rainforest, where you can stroll together under the 300-foot tall hemlock and spruce trees, dripping in moss. Keep your eyes peeled for Roosevelt elks, who like to hang out by the nearby Elwha River.

End your day by watching the sunset at one of the stunning Olympic National Park beaches, like Ruby Beach or Rialto Beach. There’s nothing more romantic than watching the golden sun sink into the Pacific for the day.

Make a cozy inn, like the Lake Quinault Lodge, your home base for your stay. If you really want to kick the romance up a notch, there’s even a few rooms with their own fireplaces, so you can curl up and plan tomorrow’s adventures together.

Romantic Things to Do in Olympic National Park

  • Take a Tour — see the highlights of the park on a day trip that includes a guide, meals, and all your transportation logistics covered.
  • 3-Day Adventure — wander wonderful beaches and rainforests along this 3-day trip with nothing but breathtaking nature surrounding you, for the more adventurous couples!
