An absolute must-see where you’ll find beautiful waterfalls, natural pools, hiking trails, camping areas, and historical sites, making it a fascinating place for your day trip.
You’ll have to pay if you want to visit some of the optional attractions inside, but you can enter and explore the rainforest completely free!

Things To Do In El Yunque
El Yunque is a really huge forest and there are so many things to do. So if you want to explore every corner, prepare to stay there most of your day – if not the whole day!
El Yunque Visitor Center
El Yunque Visitor Center is the main visitor and information center in the reserve, excellent for first-time visitors. Here you have to walk along a little bridge to get to the Portal Lobby.
Here’s what you’ll find in the Portal Lobby:
- An information booth
- Educational displays

- Small gift shop
- Instagram-worthy selfie spots!
Hiking Tours In El Yunque
Take fully guided nature walks surrounded by an immersive atmosphere with 25 miles of different trails to suit all hiking preferences and abilities. Hike along the river while admiring the lush flora and fauna, make a stop at the ‘La Frutera Flores’ fruit stand for some delicious snacks, and have fun with the best water activities – make sure to follow your guide’s instructions to stay safe during your visit since some parts of the path can be slippery.
Waterfalls
El Yunque is full of stunning waterfalls that make perfect photography spots. Swimming is not allowed and some of them can only be accessed with a private guide. However, you can bathe in the natural pools after spending a long day exploring the forest.
Camping
There are no designated camping areas in El Yunque, but visitors are allowed to set up their tents along most roads and trails.

There are two towers inside El Yunque: the Yokahú Tower and the Mount Britton Tower – enjoy some of the best panoramic views of the forest and the ocean in Puerto Rico.

2. Hollywood’s Favorite: La Cueva Del Indio
La Cueva del Indio is a location in Arecibo that features a series of rock formations and caves that were formed by the sea. Inside these caves, you’ll be able to see over 80 pre-Columbian indigenous carvings on the limestone walls (the largest collection of petroglyphs along the coastline!) and learn more about their culture. Visitors can also take a refreshing dip in the ocean or have a picnic on the beach while admiring the breathtaking landscape. I recommend taking tours like Perfect Puerto Rico Getaway with Snorkeling or Full-Day Cave and Waterfall Adventure so you can experience the cave to its fullest potential.
Fun fact: this has been the filming location for several Hollywood movies like ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, ‘Treasure Island’, and ‘A Perfect Getaway’!
Note: As of 2023, the ladder to descend into the cave has been removed by the Department of Natural Resources for safety reasons. But there’s still a way in that requires climbing to the top of the rocks where you’ll find a crack that will get you inside the cave. Although taking this trail can be dangerous, you can do so at your own risk if you have the proper hiking equipment and abilities. Also, make sure to ask the guides for more information.
